Bomb Plot Is Said to Contain ‘Hallmarks of Al Qaeda’

Editors note: Apparently Al Qaeda is launching failed attacks or “dry runs” from Yemen now.

Reports say that these events at hand fit Anwar Awlaki’s M.O. and that he is one of the top “Al-CIA-duh” ringleaders.

However Anwar Awlaki had lunch at the Pentagon after 9/11, openly admitted by CBS.

When will the American people wake up and realize that the terrorists are mostly assets of intelligence agencies and that most terror attacks have been state sponsored?

Anwar al-Awlaki – the radical spiritual leader linked to several 9/11 attackers, the Fort Hood shooting, and the attempted Christmas Day bombing of an airliner – was a guest at the Pentagon in the months after 9/11, a Pentagon official confirmed to CBS News.

Awlaki was invited as “…part of an informal outreach program” in which officials sought contact “…with leading members of the Muslim community,” the official said. At that time, Awlaki was widely viewed as a “moderate” imam at a mosque in Northern Virginia.

At the same time, the FBI was also interviewing Awlaki about his contacts with three of the 9/11 attackers – Nawaf al-Hazmi, Khalid al Midhar and Hani Hanjour – who were all part of the crew of five that hijacked the American Airlines jet that hit the Pentagon.

In the days after 9/11, Awlaki told FBI officials he remembered meeting al Hazmi but recalled little else about him. It is believed Awlaki met both al Hazmi and al Midhar in 2000 when Awlaki was the imam at a mosque in San Diego. Awlaki later moved to Northern Virginia and al Hazmi was seen at the Virginia mosque as well. However, there are scant details about Awlaki’s actual contacts with al Midhar and Hani Hanjour.

In 2001, the FBI did not share this investigative information with the Pentagon, but officials say there was no reason to – Awlaki was not a suspect and was not believed to be connected to the 9/11 attacks. Instead he was viewed as a valuable liaison to the Muslim community and a potential investigative source. As one official put it, “he was a much different guy back then.”

Bomb Plot Is Said to Contain ‘Hallmarks of Al Qaeda’

WASHINGTON — A day after two packages containing explosives, shipped from Yemen and addressed to synagogues in Chicago, were intercepted in Britain and Dubai, setting off a broad terrorism scare, Janet Napolitano, the secretary of Homeland Security, said that the plot “has the hallmarks of Al Qaeda.”

On Friday, President Obama said that the explosives represented a “credible terrorist threat” to the United States. In television interviews on Saturday morning, Ms. Napolitano went a step further.

“I think we would agree with that, that it does contain all the hallmarks of Al Qaeda and in particular Al Qaeda A.P.,” she said, referring to Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

Ms. Napolitano and the police in Dubai on Saturday confirmed that the bomb discovered in Dubai, in cargo from Yemen bound for the United States, contained the explosive PETN, the same chemical explosive in the bomb sewn into the underwear of the Nigerian man who tried to blow up an airliner over Detroit last Dec. 25. That plot, too, was hatched in Yemen, a country that is regarded as one of the most significant fronts in the battle with extremists.

The British home secretary, Theresa May, said Saturday that the bomb found in Britain was capable of exploding, The Associated Press reported.

According to The A.P., Ms. May said that the cargo plane carrying the package could have been the intended target, and that the explosives could have downed the aircraft if the bomb had detonated.

The discovery on Friday of the explosives packed in toner cartridges for computer printers, based on a tip from Saudi intelligence officials, began an urgent hunt for other suspicious packages in the United States, Yemen and other countries.

The British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported in its Saturday editions that the plot was discovered “after a tipoff” to an MI6 agent “responsible for Yemen.”

A spokesman at the Foreign Office, responsible for MI6, Britain’s intelligence agency, refused to comment on the report when he was reached by telephone on Saturday.
