EDGEWATER, Fla. — Central Florida homeowners association is preparing to vote on banning children from playing outside.
The revamped rules and regulations are being considered by the HOA at the Persimmon Place subdivision on North Ridgewood Avenue in Edgewater. The neighborhood consists of 48 townhomes surrounded by a parking lot and little room for children to play.
“I think it’s ridiculous. I think the kids should be allowed to play,” a resident said.
“I think people forgot what it was like to be a kid and want to go outside and play,” said resident Shawna Magee, who is fighting the proposal.
The HOA board said the proposed rule, which will carry a $100 fine for every violation, is all about safety.

I think this sounds more like a way to raise money than it is to protect the kids. How ridiculous to assume a kid is going to sit inside all day and not go outside to play. Who are these people on the Home Owners Association, Nazis? Give me a break.
I believe they are just talking about a common area that is unsafe. It also sounds like the children are not supervised and in unsafe areas. They need to create a common area where the children can play safely and supervised. What age are we talking? That would certainly make a difference too.
“You wouldn’t see them playing the parking lot at Walmart or Kmart…” You had better believe that if I paid rent to live at some mega-lo-mart, I would find a safe spot towards the back to let my kids play. However, they would not be allowed to play on utility meters. As the mother of a skater, I find it disgusting that kids are not allowed to skate or bmx as long as they are mindful and respectful of others. Not allowed to play tag? Give me a break. Some of my fondest childhood memories involve playing tag, freeze tag, tv tag and cootie tag – and guess what!?! We did so on pavement where the occasional car would pass by. Nobody ever got more than a skinned knee or elbow. What will they think of next? Restricting lemonade stands? Scratch that. It’s already illegal too without a permit.
Diane Terry! Yes, a common area with concrete to skate and play on big wheels would be ideal but surely you jest, what age are they? If they are super young then of course they should be supervised but if they are a bit older there is no need of a babysitter. How does a child learn to be a responsible adult if they aren’t given any responsibility? The article didn’t say they were gang-bangin’ dope peddlers, they are playing. Did your ‘rents watch you playing at all times past the age of 7? I doubt it.
I really can’t blame them for this, personally I can’t stand kids.People should start thinking of living with like minded people. If you’re into swinging and casual sex,you should live in such a community. The parents should at the very least be required to sign a waver releasing responsibility for children hit by cars. Why do I have to slow down, they’re your kids?
I live in a townhome community in Naperville, Illinois. Many parents in our subdivision do not see it as their responsibility to supervise children. We have very similar problems of children not being properly supervised — or not being supervised at all. While individually they are nice kids, they behave differently when in a gang. The children have basically destroyed the small landscaped island on our street, broken branches from young trees and there have been a couple of near-misses between cars and bicycles. I would welcome an ordinance that required parents’ to supervise children playing outside.
