This “strange sound” in the video below was recorded January 31, by Mike Helms. It was witnessed at 4:00am, in a little town called Fish Creek, Wisconsin.
Mike and his wife were vacationing in a hotel outside Peninsula State Park in Door County Peninsula. The recording was from their balcony facing the park. Fish Creek is on Fish Creek Harbor.
While looking for “strange sound” videos I initially dismissed this one. The reason was because it has title screens, doesn’t show the surroundings and has stereo sound (perhaps enhanced when edited).
Mike left this video in the comments under my historical Yellowstone post here. He was interested in the article because it describes metallic sky sounds that occurred in 1893 in Yellowstone park. I theorize in the article that perhaps the sounds were related to small earthquakes.
The area of Yellowstone where the sound events occurred is one of the most seismically active in the US. The sounds heard in 1893 were over a lake just as the Fish Creek incident was over a harbor. Both are large bodies of water.

Since this happened at 4am I’m guessing it was still dark. It’s likely that this sound was a passing freighter ship, moving large shipping containers around within and on the ship. If the atmospheric conditions were just so then it would have sounded like it was coming from everywhere and nowhere.

Yeah, that’s the sort of thing we were thinking too. We even went out to the Fish Creek harbor that morning to take a look and everything was frozen solid. If it was a freighter ship it would have to be out in Green Bay somewhere where it wasn’t frozen- not really close to us. Or if moving large containers possibly Menominee, MI about 18.5 miles away. I only captured a very short amount of time in the recording- just to see if others at the hotel knew what it was- but we heard it for at least an hour, and I’ll tell you, when my wife and I listen to many of the videos from other parts of the world on YouTube we instantly recognize the sounds we heard that morning at Fish Creek. Our video only covers a fraction of what we heard- The thing that puzzles me is how those other videos out there really do have the same sounds captured that we ourselves heard. If it wasn’t for that it would be a whole lot easier for me to dismiss.
