From the Gulf Stream to the Bloodstream and Why What You’re About To Read Is The Alarm Bell of The Pending Gulf Disaster

When Is Enough, Enough?

For nearly five months, the BP oil disaster has consumed the minds of millions of people worldwide.  In addition to the horrific impacts that the crude oil and chemical dispersants have daily on the environment and the economy, a fatal threat has quietly slipped by the public’s proverbial radar.  The harm dealt by this silent enemy is beginning to creep into the lives of those living and working in the Gulf.  The problem has been lurking in the Gulf since the first days of the BP oil spill and now has the potential ignite a disaster unlike any this country has ever seen.

The test results can been seen here:

Who is this masked bandit?  What is this mysterious force that has the potential to outpace the spill’s catastrophic events thus far? Though it may sound like a simple answer, (and it is not easy to swallow) the truth is that this tragedy is silent, and if you live in the Gulf, it is most likely affecting you right now as you read this.  What is it? Your health may be in extreme jeopardy due to the toxic effects of the dispersant Corexit and volatile organic compo unds (VOCs) from crude oil inundating the air. Through recent studies conducted under the combined efforts of Michelle Nix of Gulf Coast Oil Spill Volunteers, Jo Billups and Karen Harvill of Sassafrass, Dr. Robert Naman, Project Gulf Impact, medical professionals, and the brave Gulf residents who have agreed to be tested, the toxic health effects of the poisons in the air and in the sea have been documented for the first time. The results? This stands to become one of the greatest health tragedies The United States has ever seen.

Project Gulf Impact © 2010

If this is such a powerful threat, why has it gone so under reported for so long? Why is mainstream media ignoring these potentially large-scale health problems? The scenario’s biggest problem is the scenario itself. Perpetrated by a corporation, the influx of relief that would ordinarily stream in after most acts of God has quietly gone elsewhere.

Why is this killer so silent?  Why have we not heard much about the disastrous health effects of this oil and dispersant in the air?  Why are everyday citizens not catching on to what gargantuan health problems are coming in the not-so-distant future, affecting everyone, even the journalists who should be reporting on it?  The answer may seem strange, and it is complex, however the biggest problem facing this mounting horrific scenario is… the BP oil spill was not a hurricane.

The oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico will go down in history as one of the biggest catastrophes this planet has ever seen. Books are already being written on how much we didn’t know. The cover up and the lies that led this country into the health crisis we are about to face will be documented in years to come. Acts of God, like hurricanes, are fast and furious, the damage is immediate. This, on the other hand, is a slow death.

With a hurricane, we know the death toll, the devastation right away. We see the bodies, the houses underwater, and the numbers of dollars lost in real-time as all of the data floods the national spotlight in the aftermath of the disaster. With disasters like Hurricane Katrina, our heartstrings are tugged as we witness cities underwater, mothers crying out for their children, and the newly homeless wandering the streets. We are used to hurricanes. We have evacuation routes. Whether they function or not, we have plans in place for disasters like these.

No such plan exists for the victims of an oil spill. Instinctively, we are aware of floods, fires, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other “over the counter” disasters.  Most of us have never suffered an oil spill, much less have any notion of what to do in the event of one. The problem we are facing now transcends most disasters this nation has suffered in the last century.

The oil spill, and our ensuing response, has created a darker and deadlier aftermath that will persist for decades. The difference is between a swift and lethal blow verses lingering end-stage cancer.  Like the first stage of cancer, which often goes long-undetected, this aftermath is a slow, deadly creep. We are entering stage one of the Gulf residents’ proverbial “cancer”.

What BP, Thad Allen, The Federal Government, and The EPA Don’t Want You To Know

The residents of the Gulf of Mexico are entering a crisis whose scope cannot be calculated. Several symptoms have been reported, from subtle to severe: skin rashes and infections, upper respiratory burning, congestion and cough, headaches, nausea, vomiting, and neurological symptoms including short-term memory loss and coordination problems.  These health problems, if acknowledged at all, are mis-diagnosed, buried, and mis-attributed.

Amidst a vacuum created by the unwillingness of federal, state, and private sector medical organizations to address the growing health problems, independent, privately-funded groups like Gulf Coast Oil Spill Volunteers (GCOSV), Sassafrass, and Project Gulf Impact have taken matters into their own hands.

Patterns are emerging. The same symptoms are being reported across the four hardest hit states. Michelle Nix of GCOSV discovered the Volatile Solvents Profile – a blood test that tests for hydrocarbons in the blood.  Through the generous support of Jo Billups and Karen Harvill of Sassafrass, and the support of Dr. Robert Naman, among others, testing on Gulf residents has begun.  The results are extremely alarming.

Several volatile hydrocarbons found in crude oil have been detected in the blood of several residents from Orange Beach, AL. Among the hydrocarbons tested, ethylbenzene, xylene, hexane were detected at abnormally high levels. The individuals tested were not directly involved in BP’s clean-up operations, nor had they been exposed to any industrial environment where the presence of these compounds would be of concern. Due to these circumstances, it can be deduced that residents living near the Gulf of Mexico shoreline are at exposure risk.

Crude oil is composed of several highly toxic compounds, including light weight hydrocarbons, often referred to as “light-ends,” which can easily enter the atmosphere and invade the terrestrial environment. These lightweight hydrocarbons are classified as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s), which can be tested in the blood, urine, breath, and sometimes tissues. The tests that were performed on several gulf coast residents indicated the presence of ethyl benzene, xylene, & hexane. While their toxicity is known, specific data on the dose and physiological responses to the aforementioned hydrocarbons is generally scarce in the scientific literature. Ethyl benzene is suspected by the International Agency for Research on Cancer to be a human carcinogen. Acute, high-exposure symptoms include eye irritation, upper respiratory irritation, and dizziness. Chronic exposure has resulted in irreversible inner ear damage and hearing loss, as well as severe kidney damage and cancer.

Xylene is metabolized into methylhippuric acid by the body. Studies on xylene toxicity have determined a potential relationship between gaseous exposure and the development of leukemia. The chemical is highly toxic to the central nervous system and manifests as dizziness, lack of coordination, and cognitive decline. Chronic exposure is also known to cause kidney failure. Studies on hexane toxicity are highly limited, but include evidence of neurological impairment manifest by decreased nerve conduction velocity.

(CDC.gov)

These chemicals have the potential to cause both acute and chronic symptoms depending upon the dose and time frame of exposure. Thus, while low doses may not result in immediate and apparent symptoms, the cumulative nature of these toxins means that disease may still manifest years down the line if exposure occurs chronically. While many VOC’s are excreted very quickly, the human body is impacted with every dose, no matter how minuscule. When the impact of several tiny doses are combined, such as in people who are experiencing daily low-level exposure, the result can be detrimental. In addition to the direct impact of these specific VOC’s, many of them can be metabolized by the body and converted into other structurally distinct compounds, some of which are known to accumulate causing several different types of cancer, genetic damage, and birth defects. In essence, the health threat of chronic low-dose chemical toxicity is highly underestimated. Strict bio-monitoring and caution is required to prevent the potential unseen slaughter by a silent chemical killer.

These results prove that we are in an extremely dangerous situation, a bubble that is about to burst wide open.  Unless people begin realizing that the sickness they’ve been feeling for the last few weeks is not a cold, but that it is chemical exposure, there will be no help.  Unless people start demanding that this oil spill, and every horror that goes along with it is put immediately back into the national spotlight, there will be no hope for people to fully understand to dangers and take the necessary precautions.  Unless we all stand up as a people, start communicating, researching, sharing information, and spreading the truth instead of lies, we will enter a catastrophe that we are, as a people, nowhere near prepared to handle on a local or national level.  It is time to demand the truth, and demand it now.

The blood test performed on these individuals is called the Volatile Solvents Profile (Metametrix.com). The test can be obtained and administered by any physician with the ability to perform a simple blood draw. The test will be shipped to a laboratory for analysis and returned to your doctor for interpretation and treatment.

Please report symptoms to the Project Gulf Impact health line: (504) 814-028 or on Facebook at the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Volunteers page.

**Update - We have received multiple questions of the same nature and thought it would be prudent to answer them.

1.Were these chemicals tested in any individuals in the same area PRIOR to the oil spill? And if so, what were those levels. If not, then we have no background information to base these blood test results on in the general population of this location.

No, this is not a traditional test. The physicians we spoke to weren’t even aware that these tests existed until Gulf Coast Oil Spill Volunteers discovered them. It is not a standard test

2.Have testing been done in other areas of the country not exposed in any way to the oil spill (i.e. controls)?

No they have not. These tests take time and are very expensive. We are currently working on/collecting donations to get testing done from all 50 states.

3. Were these people related, from the same family, living in the same household?

No, they all live in different households and none of them are blood relatives.

4. What are the employment history of these people tested? Could they have been exposed to these chemicals in the workplace?

The people tested included a real estate agent, a hair dresser, and a national park service worker.

5. Were these individuals tested because they were showing some type of symptoms of disease or were they chosen at random?

Yes, they were chosen because they all showed signs of hydrocarbon poisoning.

  1. Linda Menzies says:

This is an excellent piece, thank you

  2. This is a very well-researched article. Thank you for compiling and presenting the information.

I went to Florida in June to help my family leave the Gulf Coast. My lungs felt like they had been splashed by acid. When the wind was onshore, the rotten egg smell from the methane caused instant congestion. The ocean was acidic. That was back in June.

There is no solution to this problem other than moving far away from the Southeast and maybe the entire Atlantic Coast. Satellite imagery shows that the Florida Loop Current is broken and there are early indications that the oil and dispersants have hit the Gulf Stream, which will create an Ice Age in eastern Canada and Europe. It is estimated it will take two years for this to happen.

The well is not capped. The first well had a broken drill string on February 13th. Obama was apprised of the situation, but not the public. Well, save for Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Vanguard and Goldman Sachs. They used this inside information to dump BP stock before the blowout on April 20. The April blowout was Wellhead B, the relief well drilled after the February incident.

The capping that BP said was impossible just a week before this miracle of miracles happened to coincide with Hurricane Bonnie. When the boats were evacuated, BP moved the ROV to Wellhead A. The GPS coordinates clearly show this on the video feeds, and the GPS coordinates coincide with the coordinates listed on the MMS applications.

This blowout continues to gush. Corexit and who knows what is sprayed along the coastlines at night. There are plenty of videos on YouTube showing the dispersants in their powdered form covering the water and beaches. This would not be happening if the well had been capped.

Yes, we need to stop the dispersants immediately. We also need to relocate the population immediately, particularly those living along the Gulf Coast waters. The information contained in this article should scare the hell out of everyone, and yet people seem oblivious as they hack orange phlegm.

Those who survive this gas and chemical exposure and feel healthy enough to reproduce risk genetic mutations in their offspring, which will create another set of problems.

I would like to see blood test results of a control group far removed from the gulf or any other source of these substances and blood test results of long term workers at oil refineries. Also I am concerned about the potential for unfounded hysteria.

  4. Incriminally Sane says:

The only problem with this article is that they do NOT explain what the future outcome form this exposure is going to be. Maybe they are trying to be easy on us by not telling us we are going to die from this exposure to the VOC’s and the toxic exposure to the many chemicals in the Corexit 9500 and 9527.

Tell the people the truth! This stuff is going to kill thousands, even millions of people and BP and the Government will have gotten away with MASS MURDER!

Are YOU going to just sit there and let them get away with this mass Genocide?

    • Alex says:

No one knows if this is going to kill millions of the people. The problem wit the situation in the Gulf is the only people that will cover it are so called conspiracy theorist websites like ours. We specifically made sure that we had no theory in this article because it is extremely important that people understand this is the real deal.

  5. Marcie ELlis says:

I live near Chocolate Bayou, TX. Since the well explosion began being “treated” with chemicals I have noticed many people in my area & farther inland, complaining of illness, mostly throat irritation, respiratory infection, coughing, etc. I have been quite ill, now for the 2nd time and I believe it is due to “the BP flu”.

  6. I can tell you about voc and your health because i paint cars for a living! In the past year i have had guillion beret syndrome & cancer and many other health problems. Dont think this is bs.

  7. courtnye says:

what I would like to know is: How far north of the spill are these people getting sick? I live just north of New Orleans on the other side of Lake Pontchartrain, and Just wondering?

  8. Dana Pearson says:

Thank you so much for this opportunity to share…Five days into this oil hemorrhage I sent out a “chicken Little” letter to my whole mailing list stating that this catastrophy was going to be the worst thing our planet has ever experienced and that they were not going to stop it. Not one person believed me. And I just “know” that it has not been stopped. I live in northeast Washington state and about two months ago we had some pretty heavy rain. As I was waiting at a stop sign on one of our country roads there were mud puddles on both sides of the road. My attention was drawn to the fact that every rain drop that hit that puddle produced a big bubble with foam around it. I fully believe that those foaming bubbles were the result of those disperants that had been carried all the way from the gulf with the wind currents.when I got home I found the same thing happening in the puddles in our driveway…WAKE UP AMERICA…NONE OF US ARE TRULY SAFE FROM THIS STUFF AND MY QUESTION IS, iF THE LEAK IS FIXED THEN WHY IS OUR PLANES STILL SPRAYING THESE TOXIC CHEMICALS AT NIGHT???You are so right, this nightmare is just getting started and I for one am tired of being treated like an idiot that will buy anything the Government and the media will throw at us.
Thanks again for this opportunity to share….Dana Pearson

  9. Paul says:

The gulf coast is big, it runs from Cancun for thousands of miles to Key West. I wish they would narrow it down a little when they report things like this. Where were the blood test people from? If I live in Naples, do I need to be as worried as someone living in Louisiana, or Brownsville, or Tallahassee?

  10. Joseph Kline says:

People of America, I’ve been doing my home work and came up on something you might need to see for your self, or you may know about it anyways, but this has been going on for such a long time. it’s been their plan for over 60years, America look up these documents, “ZEITGEIST” “ZEITGEIST ADDENDUM” “THE FUTURE OF FOOD” “OBAMA DECEPTION” SITA SINGS THE BLUES” and “END GAME” WHEN THE POWER OF LOVE OVERCOMES THE LOVE OF POWER, IT IS THEN YOU WILL FIND PEACE.

  11. The Gulf Oil Spill disaster is a consequence of the collective aspirations of the American establishment to maintain the western living standards of the elite, the aristocracy and the just plain greedy!

  12. setpoppy says:

This article leaves a lot of unanswered questions:
    1. Were these chemicals tested in any individuals in the same area PRIOR to the oil spill? And if so, what were those levels. If not, then we have no background information to base these blood test results on in the general population of this location.
    2. Are all of the people tested served by the same water supply?
    3. Have testing been done in other areas of the country not exposed in any way to the oil spill (i.e. controls)?
    4. Were these people related, from the same family, living in the same household?
    5. What are the employment history of these people tested? Could they have been exposed to these chemicals in the workplace?
    6. Were these individuals tested because they were showing some type of symptoms of disease or were they chosen at random?

From an epidemiological standpoint, those of just some of the questions that need to be answered for these results to have scientific validity.

The article also doesn’t state how many people were tested, only “several”. What does that mean?

Has testing been performed on people that had known exposure to the oil (i.e. people directly involved with the cleanup)?

Has testing been performed on people that have some type of unexplained symptoms that have been exposed directly to the oil?

To Kelly Ann Thomas: Methane is an odorless gas. The “rotten egg smell” is added to natural gas during processing so that gas leaks can be detected in the home, etc. Since any methane from the well blowout would have come directly out the ground, it would be odorless. How will oil and dispersants in the Gulf Stream (assuming that would be true, and I highly doubt that even if any would be present that it would be in any significant levels–the dilution factor would be huge–a few million gallons of oil and less than 2 million gallons of dispersants diluted in TRILLIONS or more gallons of water), cause an ice age? And wouldn’t that be welcomed at this time, since polar ice if melting from global warming? I won’t even comment on your statements about the well continuing to gush. That is absurd.

By the way, I live in south central Louisiana.

    • Alex says:

Thanks for the comments. If you look at the other articles i have up you will see that today at 4pm central Project Gulf Impact will be on the radio show. You can call in and ask whatever questions you have.

    • Alex says:

“From an epidemiological standpoint, those of just some of the questions that need to be answered for these results to have scientific validity.”
I will get all your questions asked but to say it has no validity when we clearly have the tests and hundreds of sick people is ludicrous.

  14. setpoppy says:

    Alex,

First I did not deny in anything I said that people may be sick. Second, just because a test shows an increased level of a chemical does not mean that the chemical is causing a problem. You need more evidence than that for a cause/effect relationship. That is why I asked most of those questions to help to determine if in fact those chemicals that were detected may or may not be causing any illness and if those chemicals did in fact come from the BP oil spill or some other source. And again, the article does not state if these tests were run on sick or apparently healthy people.

Few people critically evaluate what they read. They take everything at face value. And now with the internet, anyone can post anything they want to without any proof or review by anyone knowledgeable of the topic discussed.

    • Alex says:

Setpoppy, All your questions will be answered in about 40 mins(5pm est) when Gulf Impact comes onto our radio show. I also sent them your whole question list and I will be posting the answers in this article.

When will we all wake up? All of us are so terrified of having any more jobs sent overseas and other financial ‘punishments’ brought down upon us by the ‘elite’ that we say nothing! The elite want to destroy both this planet and the whole human race! Maybe the shoe is on the wrong foot?

  17. Demian Roberts says:

Are oil field workers given blood tests to determine levels of hydrocarbons in their blood? If not why not?
I know that a friend of mine who is working on the cleanup is required to wear an air monitoring badge but not a respirator

  18. anthony says:

I think you are great for writing such a an upstanding piece of journalism. You would not think that the author would get criticism for lack of information, as one or two of your readers have done in the comments. Kinda funny how some your your self proclaimed intelligent readers act like they know how to establish a medical baseline (with the specific questions you posted); in reality, the correct questions would be far different.

Glad to see someone care, thanks for such a great job; you are inspiring others to be as responsible as yourself. Time to get mad at the people making a living from oil, time we nationalize our countries minerals. Nothing like having foreign companies pollute our national waters, land, and people. And it is also high time we stop nick picking the people who are trying to make this a better place, like what this author did for us today with this fine article. being intelligent also involves using one’s common sense. And with the facts surrounding this man made foolish for a dollar stupid human disaster in the gulf, we know that there are problems here that all of us need to address, and most of this is our own petty selfish arrogant behavior. When we start pointing fingers at our own family, friends, and co-workers; then our problems will be addressed once and for all.

I always wondered what the other guy would do for a buck; any denial or word play will not prevent the people around you from staring you down when they see you, and yell out in front of everyone how you alone betrayed this town.

  19. setpoppy says:

    Anthony,

I am a medical professional that asked the questions previously. What questions would you ask? You failed to mention your far different questions that you claim would be appropriate. What is wrong with more information? As I said, the original article left out numerous facts. My questions were answered and the additional information helps to make an informed opinion about the validity of the testing. Once again, I did not deny that there may be some illness associated with the oil spill, but I want reliable and thorough testing to be done before jumping to conclusions. As I said before also, just because something is present doesn’t mean that it is causing an effect.

  20. John says:

I worked the people who did the first ever Titration(see definition below) on Algae oil(oil derived from Spirulina algae) in the USA. This process is part of what helps discover the best formula for turning the oil into a biodiesel fuel(green fuel). I also have a video, which I am not allowed to release(search for “T-co Alternative Fuels Algae” in Google to see a 1 min version I left of the Internet) in which they take dried Algae and wood chips, with a proprietary catalyst and make green Biodiesel, crude oil for processing and diesel from the same feedstock. It takes, with this proven patented system, the only one proven to work at high volume and is in Virginia at a Naval Port, $5-7 per gallon to produce green biodiesel with Algae feedstocks. They say they can get the cost down to $3-4 per gallon. This is also using the cheapest costing Algae source in the USA! They are growing their own algae, but they can not grow it fast enough for high volume production. One last point. The algae that grows in saltwater is what was tried first, and was found to be inferior. Not enough oil content. So, the freshwater algae became the source for the oil.

Also, any fat cells, from either plant or beast, can be used to make biofuels. Think about it. Endless supply. Hemp oil is the best oil to use for creating biofuels and is grown in large scale in Canada, China and Russia. The only thing holding the US back from fuel freedom is the lack of HEMP production. Plain and simple.

Algae as biodiesel is a just another white rabbit to chase. Too hard to extract and not enough room to grow it. Remember you still have to fertilize it and have it exposed to sun. Only shallow ponds and indoor environments will work. The department of homeland security, the Navy and Army were all involved with this Algae to Biodiesel experiment which took place in Alabama, and the Navy has ships running on algae biodiesel right now!

Why have you not heard this? Because the researcher was ex-Army, and he received funding from the Navy to do this! They use it, and keep it from everyone else. How about that? They even asked me to participate on this project, but I refused. Senator Jeff Sessions attended the main presentation and raised ten million dollars for this project.

Here are some links to the videos I produced for this project:

    http://www.google.com/search?q=t-co+algae

    http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1709294/converting_algae_biomass_to_liquid_fuels/

    http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1335953/algae_to_fuel_methods_presented_by_david_james/

    http://www.metacafe.com/watch/2022204/t_co_biodiesel_seminar_now_on_dvd/

$2 a barrel(42 gallons) for algea fuel…. BULL CRAP. more like $210 per barrel. Not cheaper than oil, and releases almost the same amount of hydrocarbons.

Titration: In waste oil, free fatty acids–FFA–are typically present that will interfere with the biodiesel reaction by “using up” some of the lye before all of the vegetable oil can react to form biodiesel. To determine how much additional lye is required, a titration is needed to be performed. This will determine how much FFA is present and how much extra lye is required to drive the biodiesel reaction to completion. This titration utilizes a 0.1% sodium hydroxide water solution.

  21. Jeff Kehoe says:

If you’s like a comparison to the size of the gulf oil spill in relation to the volume of the Texas stadium, the spill and the dispersents combined would equal a 20 ounce can of soda sitting in the middle of the field. Based on the volume of the spill that’s a drop in the ocean. Another article based on scare tactics and seeking to further the eco nuts agenda.

  22. Tom Burns says:

I found out about a health clinic on the southern Gulf Coast of Florida that has a biological detox remedy for the chemicals and organism from the BP Oil Disaster. There is hope for those affected. Just thought I would get the word out to help. You can find them at gulfoilspillremedy.com
